Carnegie Robotics' MultiSense Sensor on 5 of 8 Top DRC Finishers

In 2012 Boston Dynamics selected Carnegie Robotics to supply the perception sensor to ride atop the fleet of ATLAS robots that would compete in the 2013 and 2014 DARPA Robotics Challenge. The sensors provide very low latency stereo data for complex, close-range manipulation tasks such as opening a door or grappling with a valve handle or steering wheel. The axially spinning laser scanner provides longer range 3D imagery for overall navigation and driving tasks. Finally, the sensor would provide video out and time sync all output data streams. A key requirement was that the sensor interface be open and easily accessible by the multiple teams. Carnegie Robotics provided the MultiSense SL and supports the teams through its customer portal site.  At the conclusion of the 2013 Trials, ATLAS robots with MultiSense heads took second, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions!
