MultiSense SLB

Tri-modal 3D range sensor

The MultiSense SLB is a tri-modal, FPGA equipped sensor that enables laser, video, and stereo vision capabilities, in a compact and rugged design. Highly accurate and dense 3D point clouds are aligned and colorized on-board and transmitted at GigE speeds with approximately 1 frame latency.

The MultiSense SLB is the second generation of our tri-modal (laser, 3D stereo, and video) high-resolution, high-accuracy, GigE 3D range sensor. The MultiSense SLB design is a marriage of the MultiSense S7 stereo camera and Hokuyo UTM-30LX-EW laser. The MultiSense SLB produces 3D point clouds from both the spinning laser and the stereo camera which are accurately aligned and colorized on board the sensor. This pair provides extremely dense, full-frame range data at high frame-rates from the S7 camera, which is complemented by highly accurate data, at lower rates, from the spinning laser.

The original MultiSense SL was the sensor of choice for the Boston Dynamics Atlas humanoid robots in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. As the “head” of the humanoid, the SL provided the majority of perceptual data used for teleoperation as well as automated control.

Laser Equipped

The Hoyuko UTM-30LX-EW is a lightweight compact 2D LiDAR sensor used in localization and obstacle detection on robots. The Hoyuko, which outputs 43,000 points per second, is axially rotated on a spindle at a user-specified speed.

Rugged Design

The SLB’s compact housing and rugged design protect it from even the harshest of environments. Like its smaller sibling, the S7, Gorilla Glass by Corning windows provide protection from scratches and the effects of minor optical distortions. All MultiSense products are subjected to a series of rigorous tests including extreme vibration, hot/cold thermal cycling, and highly sensitive leak checks.

In the 2013 DRC Trials, 5 of the top 8 scoring teams relied on the Carnegie Robotics SL sensor head.

Simple Deployment

Carnegie Robotics’ ROS-based API enables the viewing of both live and 3D range data, the adjustments of camera and stereo parameters, calibration checking, log playback, and the changing of sensor IP addresses. Our open-source C++ library and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces help to facilitate an easy integration of MultiSense SLB data into your existing systems.
